GLOSSARY
Baffles
Baffles are installed in the flocculation basins to achieve the required velocity gradient profile through each basin. The baffles are made from stainless steel and are installed in an over/under arrangement in serpentine concrete flocculation channels. The baffle plates have been designed such that plates may be removed to increase the flow through the basins while maintaining the same maximum headloss calculated at the design flow.

24-inch Butterfly Valve
The 24” butterfly valves are used to isolate the flocculation channels from the sedimentation basins so they can be drained and cleaned independent of the sedimentation basins. Four of these valves are installed on the upstream wall of each flocculation basin and the valves are operated manually.

Solids Handling Business Case Evaluation
Settled water effluent channel is being monitored only. A high level here would lead to a high level in the coagulated water splitter box which would close the raw water rate of flow controller.

Recommended Mode
The Sedimentation basins sludge collection system operates in the automatic mode.
Initiation of solids cycle collection will be based on a real-time clock. Timer settings will be locally operator adjustable and SCADA adjustable.
• Max Flow - 11 mgd
• Theoretical Detention Time - ≥ 2 hours
• Type - inclined plate settlers
• Plate angle - 55o
• Plate settlers surface loading rate - 0.24 gpm/ft2
• Weir loading rate - 20,000 gpd/ft weir
• Settled water turbidity - < 1.0 NTU (average RW turbidity ≤ 10 NTU); < 2.0 NTU (average RW turbidity > 10 NTU)
SEDIMENTATION
Alternate Mode
Most of the equipment in the sludge collection system can only be operated manually through the HMI.
Solids collector drive mechanisms and valves can be manually controlled from the HMI.

Design Criteria
None
To provide enough contact time for the precipitates formed from chemical coagulation to grow large enough to be removed by
gravity settling.
• Flocculation Basin Flow Setpoint
• Chemical dose at Rapid Mix
Recommended Mode
The Flocculation basin trains operate in the Remote Manual mode.
In Remote Manual mode the weir gates are manually opened and closed from the HMI.
The following parameters will be met at max month conditions:
• Max Flow - 11 mgd
• Theoretical Detention Time - 30 min
• Detention time per stage - 7.5 min
• Head loss - 3 feet
• Stage 1 G-Value - 83 sec-1
• Stage 1 G-Value - 52 sec-1
• Stage 1 G-Value - 24 sec-1
• Stage 1 G-Value – 6.4 sec-1
• pH – 6.0 to 6.5
• Average Lime dose - 1.7 mg/L
• Average Alum dose - 10 mg/L
• Chlorine dioxide dose - ≤ 0.5 mg/L
Alternate Mode
The Flocculation basin trains can be controlled in the automatic mode.
The weir gates can be controlled via a future automatic mode. In this mode the weir gates would be opened and closed to maintain a flow setpoint.
A Local Manual mode also exists by which the weir gates are controlled locally at the actuator. The weir gates can also be manually opened and closed via a handwheel.

Particle Counters
Each sedimentation basin has a particle counter providing online, real time continuous measurement of the settled water particle count. It is used in conjunction with the filter water particle counters to calculate the particle removal. The particle counters can sample between 1 second and 24 hours and detect particles within 2 to 750 microns. Each counter communicates with SCADA via Modbus TCP.

Hoseless Solid Collection System
The hoseless sludge collection system is a series of rigid scrapers and pipes on a cable system that remove settled solids from the bottom of the sedimentation basins. There is a hoseless sludge collector at the bottom of each sedimentation basin to increase the amount of sludge removal from the basins
